A Town with Deep Roots

  • Originally named Coal Creek, the town’s history is closely tied to the coal mining industry. In 1891, Coal Creek and neighboring Briceville became the epicenter of a major labor uprising known as the Coal Creek War. This conflict arose when local miners resisted the use of unpaid convict labor in the mines—a struggle that ultimately led to the end of Tennessee’s convict lease system.
  • Today, you can explore this pivotal chapter in labor history at the Coal Creek Miners Museum, right here in Rocky Top.

Whether you’re here for the adventure or the history—or both—Rocky Top welcomes you with open arms and an unforgettable experience.
